What is tinnitus?

Ringing, buzzing, hissing or roaring. It is a sensation of sound generated inside your head that only you can hear. This sensation is called tinnitus and it is surprisingly common — approximately 10% of people experience it all the time, while others experience it occasionally.

What causes tinnitus?

The reason is often unclear because it can also occur in individuals who have had no previous ear problems. Tinnitus is more common in people with hearing loss or some ear diseases. There can actually be many reasons, such as dizziness, foreign body or tumor in the ear, earwax blockage, negative pressure in the middle ear space, high and low blood pressure, diabetes, medication-induced damage, and so on. Tinnitus is also associated with noise, aging, head and neck injuries, and fatigue and stress.

How does tinnitus affect me?

Some people can ignore their tinnitus most of the time. For others, however, the symptoms can become so disturbing that a proper night’s sleep is impossible. A negative cycle can begin, causing tinnitus to take center stage in everyday life. Consult a physician or hearing professional if you are experiencing the symptoms of tinnitus.

Can tinnitus be treated?

If you’re experiencing tinnitus, it’s important to consult a specialist. Hearing tests and, if necessary, other examinations are conducted to diagnose tinnitus. Tinnitus may disappear if the underlying condition causing it is treated. While there is no definitive cure for tinnitus, it may persist. However, there are several ways to gain control over tinnitus and reduce its impact on your life.

Sound therapy

Sound therapy means listening to sounds. It can be a helpful tool in managing your tinnitus. Sound cannot eliminate tinnitus; however, sound can make it seem like the tinnitus is eliminated or reduced. Sound can help you focus your attention on something more pleasant. By listening to different types of sound, it becomes easier to shift your attention away from the tinnitus sound. Together with your hearing professional, you can find the sound therapy that gives you the most relief.

If tinnitus is associated with hearing loss, hearing aids are the most effective solution.
